H2O: Dangerous Chemical!
A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide."And for plenty of good reasons, since:
- it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting
- it is a major component in acid rain
- it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state
- accidental inhalation can kill you
- it contributes to erosion
- it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes
- it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients
He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical.
- Forty-three (43) said yes,
- six (6) were undecided,
- and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.
The title of his prize winning project was, "How Gullible Are We?"He feels the conclusion is obvious.

lol nice one, proves how "dumbed down" ppl have become
great point. that kid deserves the prize.
nice post
smart kid
What? That really went down? It's a perfect display of social psychology and human stupidity combined!
Some people scare me....
Derp chem 101
Ugh, sadly it's not surprising.
wow shocking facts!
omg! ill never drink water again!!
OMG O.o
And nice blog, follow :)
I saw this on Penn and Teller, funny stuff.
Wait what, haha oh this is supposed to be funny.
I'm not surprised about this at all. People see a complicated word and automatically think it's some volatile concoctions made in a middle eastern basement by angry men with unwashed beards. You'd think they'd ask for some more information before signing something they obviously know nothing about.
lol i know right?!
that's a unique perspective on that
I seen this happen in a video people signing petitions for banning water lol
yup, we are pretty gullible
I need some!
this is kind of scary
lol pretty cool
Great post!
haha, I've read this like a thousand times and it's still funny.
That is a revealing study. I love it! I want to call water that from now on. Thanks :)
this has been done before, at my school and many shcools, whats sad is I thinks it becoming worse our school was more like 2/3 still terrible though
having a major that is rooted in chemistry, I can't believe people are this dumb.
I love this. Penn and teller did an episode of bullshit about this same sort of thing. check it out
